The Nike Dunk High is a classic sneaker released by Nike in 1985 and has since become a significant part of the brand’s identity. The inspiration behind its design dates back to basketball, where it was introduced as not only a performance shoe for basketball players but a shoe that could also be worn off the court.
Who designed the Nike Dunk High?
The Nike Dunk High was designed by Peter Moore, who also designed the iconic Air Jordan 1 for Nike. The design was inspired by the University of Oregon’s basketball team, as Moore saw players wearing different colorways of the team’s shoes. This led to the development of a shoe that could be customized to any colorway, hence the shoe’s broad appeal.
Its first release was in eight different colourways, known as the “Be True To Your School” collection, which represented eight different college basketball teams. The Dunk’s high-top cut made it a comfortable and supportive shoe, with Nike’s iconic swoosh logo prominently featured on the side to help brand recognition.
During the 90s, the Nike Dunk High became a popular shoe for skateboarding, as its sturdy design made it an excellent option for the sport. The Dunk was then reimagined as a Skateboarding shoe, titled the Dunk SB as well as being recreated in numerous designs and collaborations with different artists, including collaborations with fashion and streetwear designers like Supreme, Stussy, and Off-White.
Why are Nike Dunk High sneakers so popular?
Despite its reimaginations, the Nike Dunk High has maintained its original design, which has contributed to its continued popularity. Celebrities like Travis Scott and Justin Bieber have also been spotted wearing the Nike Dunk High, contributing to its popularity.
The Nike Dunk High has become a cultural icon in the world of sneakers. Its inspiration came from college basketball, and since then, it has taken on different forms throughout pop culture history. With its classic design and numerous iterations, the Nike Dunk High is still relevant today and remains an essential piece of Nike’s history.
