In 1964 Bill Bowerman and Phil knight founded Nike, also known as NIKE, Inc., the American Sportswear Corporation. Nike is the world’s leading retailer of sporting equipment and accessories and is located in Beaverton, Oregon. Nike was founded with the name ‘Blue Ribbon Sports’ and in 1971 the name was officially changed to ‘Nike’, a name derived from the Greek victory goddess. Carolyn Davidson, on her visit to Portland State University where she met Knight created the iconic Swoosh classic brand logo which remains one of the most recognizable logos of all time. The “Just Do It” slogan, launched in 1988 on T.V was created by Dan Wieden, who was also part of the widely identifiable Nike branding and advertisement through history.
Throughout its 56-year history, Nike dominates sports through its creative and strategic marketing with popular sports like basketball, baseball, football, skateboarding and running. Serena Williams, Rafael Nadal, Ronaldinho, Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Ken Griffey, Jr., Steve Prefontaine, Ilie Năstase and Wayne Rooney all have become the top athletes of the Nike Brand. Nike has also created signature lines from athletes including LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tiger Woods and of course Michael Jordan, of which they have created the subsidiary Jordan Brand. Nike has sponsored the U.S., South Korea, Nigeria, and Brazil national teams and sponsored NBA, WNBA and other national teams. Tinker Hatfield (Nike Air Max 1, Nike Air Trainer 1), Eric Avar (Nike Air Penny III, Nike Kobe 6) and Peter More (Air Jordan 1) are some of Nike’s notable footwear designers, among several others.
Nike has also been associated with: Supreme, Jun Takahashi, Kanye West, Hiroshi Fujiwara, UNDEFEATED, Vashtie Kola, OFF WHITE and Travis Scott. In the year 2020, Nike has taken ambitious bets on both innovation and self-reliance. The Nike space hippie – started in July – is the brand’s new destination for green goods, with over 50% of recycled components being made from the four-piece collection. The Swoosh gets closer to the future with self-locking with the Nike Adjust Auto Max introduced on Air Max Day 2020. Nike is undoubtedly the most popular sports brand for fashion and sports gear and stays relevant due to its never-ending creativity, innovation and collaborative efforts with sponsorship deals with athletes and its relevance in celebrity culture.
